Latest Symantec Internet Security Threat Report Released

Symantec has released their 23rd Internet Security Threat Report, which goes over many of the most significant risks facing the Internet, and those who use it. Digital marketers need to be very aware of these risks so they can take steps to protect themselves and their business from any type of exposure that could cause issues.

While the report is written to alert everyone to potential threats, marketers have a much greater than normal need to know since it can impact their whole business. The following are some of the most significant risks that were discussed in this edition of the report:

  • Cryptojacking – There was an 8500% increase in cryptojacking malware in 2017. There are a variety of types of cryptojacking, which can take up CPU and other system resources, and cause many other issues. This risk also impacts Internet of Things devices.
  • Software Supply Chain Attacks – Symnatec has seen a 200% increase in software supply chain attacks over the year. This is an attack type where bad actors will hack into software updates, especially in enterprise environments. While there are more people attempting these types of attacks, they are becoming harder to find and successfully exploit.
  • Ransomware – Ransomware continues to be a growing issue that is impacting a large number of people. Interestingly, it seems that those who are performing these attacks are starting to ask for lower amounts of money (or cryptocurrency) to get higher compliance rates.
  • Mobile Malware – Many people are still under the mistaken impression that mobile devices such as smartphones aren’t susceptible to malware, but that is increasingly not the case. In 2017 there was a 54% increase in mobile malware.
