(VIDEO) How to Deal with Haters

If you are successful, you have to accept one thing: Haters.

The moment you start doing well, you are going to find that there are jealous people who have nothing better to do than spend their time trying to shame you.

For whatever reason, there is a percentage of the population that finds joy in pointing out faults in others. Something about their mentality is so screwed up that they will spend almost every waking moment focused on other people’s business.

The more successful you are, the harder they will work to knock you down, because your success is an affront to their own failure.

Perhaps at one time in their life these haters had potential, but for whatever reason they miserably failed. Most of these guys in a previous era would have been relegated to sitting in the street while picking lice out of their hair and throwing their shit at people passing by.

Many of them will be famous in the future for being the crazy guy everyone talks about and wonders how he ended up in an insane asylum after being caught chasing down cats thinking he was a Chihuahua.

The internet and facebook has unfortunately given these guys a forum to speak out and be heard.

The first thing to remember about haters is that no one really takes them seriously. They create drama and often are extremely abusive, but that’s about it. While sometimes their obsessiveness crosses the line to stalking, most of them are just harmless people who have nothing better to do. It’s good to remember that 99% of them are not successful at anything, and their life sucks. They want to prove they are doing ok and that they could be successful by attacking others who are much more successful and pointing their flaws. They deep down inside want to be the people they attack, which is why they obsess over them like a jaded lover.

We all know who they are in real life: they are the guy or gal who wont stop talking about how much money they made, how they know so many famous people but they always need a loan, always need a place to stay, and always, always, are looking for new job or career. Nothing ever works out for them because they are never focused on doing well but always focused on other people’s shit instead of their own.

So most of the time, its important to just ignore the haters. It really doesn’t matter what they say or if they get it. Focus on building your business and success and ignore the attempt of the crazies to throw crap at you. If you don’t respond, most of the time the haters will either disappear into oblivion or find another person to be obsessed with.

Focus on those who get what you are doing and ignore those who don’t.

Sports Agent Scott Boras said, “If you are really effective at what you do, 95% of the things said about you will be negative. Keep your head on straight, don’t get emotional, take the heat, and just make sure your clients are smiling.” Simply put, if you are doing things right, people are going to go after you and criticize you. No one goes after failures, because no one cares what they are doing. Your haters probably don’t have anyone attacking them, because they aren’t doing anything remotely successful except annoying the shit out of people.

Perhaps the most important thing I’ve read about haters is to ignore what anonymous, hidden people say. According to Adam Gnade, “Anonymous” is not a real person. “Anonymous” is disappointment, weakness fighting back, and envy at its worse. The people who talk shit and complain and stick their nose in your business on the internet don’t hate you, they hate themselves.”

Lastly, if you want to be successful, do not expect everyone to like you. General Colin Powell said that, “Trying to get everyone to like you is a sign of mediocrity.”

There are two types of people that everyone loves, strippers and the guy who takes your order at McDonads.

So unless you are planning on wearing pasties or saying, “How can I help you?” to everyone, you better accept haters as a part of success.

  1. if only this were at all true for you Pace lol. Most of your haters are more successful than you could ever hope to be, and do it without extorting industry executives into joining their terrible circlejerk or threaten to write bad articles about them.

    1. I have to laugh: you are at one of my publications, telling me that I’m not successful. You have no idea my level of success, you have no idea even what I consider success. I have a family and a woman I love, three very successful businesses.

This publication has 75+ advertisers at one time, and for whatever reason you have this conspiracy theory that its because of some anonymous secret cabal, or that they are paying me off. How about it has to do with me being successful?

Still, here you are, making accusations on MY publication, anonymously. It’s easy to do that behind a keyboard, hidden. How about you email me privately, with your information, get me on the phone and I’ll love to talk to you.

      1. Boo – don’t offer to get him on the phone – ignore this idiot. You just said in your article to ignore so I’d suggest you ignore him as well.

My favorite hater example: Last year on World Water Day I donated a well from Charity Water and wrote a blog post to encourage others to donate to Charity Water.

        Guess what I got?

2 or 3 haters saying “of course, rich people just donate money instead of time” so not only will you get haters. You’ll even get haters when you think no one could possibly hate on something you’ve done (like donate some money)

        Screw em dude.

        1. Chris, agreed. I actually know who this is, based on their IP. They hate what I write so much that the comment on all of the articles here about how much they suck. 😉

  2. So true! they’re not just envy but also insecure. So don’t waste time dealing with these kind of people, because they’re not worthy of your time.

  3. I hate haters and that’s why I don’t discuss my success from being an internet marketer. Haters always finds a way to bring you down just so they feel better about themselves. I only tell a select few that I trust about the stuff I do and never brag about it.

  4. Haters and mostly trolls have become a real problem in the interactive comunicative web, most of the time ignoring them works like a charm.

  5. I find it hilarious that you wrote this article and the trolls on Facebook posted it over and over again. You didn’t even mention yourself, rofl, but they went nuts on you.

I’ve known Pace for almost 12 years in this industry personally and have seen him build business after business. Probably most of the kiddies haven’t a clue who he is because they are stuck in the “IM” world as they call it.

To the haters passing around this article, aren’t you just proving the point? You are talking about Pace not the other around.

    1. I call it ‘god’s work’ too, but with tongue firmly planted in cheek. Lets get real, just because haters are idiots, doesn’t make what we do elevated or praiseworthy. We generate leads with little or no concern with what companies do with them. Not sure we deserve to claim divine fortification in this context.

  6. Let’s assume you are right and that 6 years ago I was a dick. It’s possible, we all change and I for one know that I’ve gone through a lot of soul searching.

    1. Mr Mirror, without coming to quickly to the defense of Pace, I would limb to say that you do not know the difference between hypocrisy and change. Consistency is not really a human trait, contrary to assertions that people ‘do not change’. I am a 40+ yr old veteran of both advertising and got rich quick douches, and if you are telling me that Pace is a reformed douche, then I like him all the more. But don’t piss on his sharing his knowledge with current douches or haters. His article, and the inevitable comments that followed is consistent with my 25+ year career interactions with journalists, entrepreneurs, douches, reformed douches, haters and nagging reminders of one’s past. I just hope Pace keeps doing what he is doing, and doesn’t hesitate to write an article like this in the future, because of nagging reminders of the past/ haters that this article vetted. Share your knowledge, experience and foibles, Pace. I much prefer a journalist who was there, than one that never was, or currently is. A much preferred perspective than the blogger who is contributing nothing, or the beat writer who has never swung a bat.

      1. Thank you for the insight. I can honestly say that looking back, there are tons of decisions and entire periods of my life that I was probably a huge douche!

However, to regret one’s past means you can’t learn from it.

  7. Posts like this seem to almost fuel the fire going on right now. Most people don’t take kindly to those going on FB & social media groups boasting about their belongings and putting down others. See how it has turned Ryan Eagle into one of the most hated people in our industry.

  8. Yet even in a hugely successful mail campaign a seriously large portion of the money pumped into the program might as well have been flushed. Another sad truth is the marketing team has no clue as to who did or didn’t open the mail, which makes it that much more difficult to refine the program to work better next time.
