Moz to Eliminate 28% of Workforce

Moz is one of the better known digital marketing software providers.  They have been in the business for about 12 years now, and have built a strong reputation for quality information and software that has been used by millions of marketers.  The company really got its start in SEO, but they have been expanding into many other things such as social media, keyword research, content marketing, and much more.

The company, however, is struggling with the added weight of all of these other areas.  To help streamline their services and improve profitability, they have just announced that they will be laying off 28% of their workforce, including contractors and employees.

Sarah Bird, the CEO of Moz, wrote, “Increasing the breadth of the product suite added a lot of complexity to the business, but didn’t result in the growth we expected.  We do, however, have momentum in our core SEO products, especially Moz local and the new features in Pro.”

They will move back to a primary focus being on SEO.  Bird wrote, “Customers will enjoy increased investment in core SEO features, especially in local. We’re on a roll with these products; we’re out to win this market and we believe we can.  We’ve got updates planned for crawl and rank tracking that we think you’ll love.  We know we’re behind in link technology right now, and we’re working on something ambitious.”

While it is unfortunate when people lose their jobs, it is good to see that Moz is refocusing back on what they know best.  While they have had a lot of nice options outside of SEO, they are smart to make this change now before it is too late for the company as a whole.
