Latest App & SmartPhone Report from Nielsen Released

Nielsen has released a new report that looked at which smart phone apps got the most use over the course of the last year.  In the report they also mentioned that overall smartphone penetration in the United States has reached 80%, which is quite remarkable.  This is up two percent from the data released from comScore not long ago.

The top smartphone apps of 2015 is an important report for marketers because many of these apps can be used as part of an overall marketing strategy.  For example, the number one app of the year is Facebook.  Any marketer who does not have a comprehensive mobile Facebook marketing plan is really doing themselves a disservice.  There are also quite a few other apps that marketers should be using, or incorporating into their planning, so take a look at the top ten and see if you’re missing any opportunities.

Top Ten Smartphone Apps of 2015 (by Average Unique Users)

  • Facebook – 126,702,000 Average Unique Users

  • Apple Music – 54,550,000 Average Unique Users
  • Maps (Apple) – 46,406,000 Average Unique Users

As you can see, the list is dominated by Google and Facebook properties.  This is not surprising given their position in the tech industry.  While it would be nice to see some other names in the list, marketers can actually benefit from the fact that so many people are using apps from Google and Facebook.

It makes it much easier to buy advertising that will appear on hundreds of millions of user’s devices, and as we all know, Google and Facebook are experts in targeted advertising.  When planning your mobile advertising strategy, make sure you keep this top ten list in mind to ensure you get the best return on investment possible.
