Pinterest Cuts Spam Clicks in Half

Pinterest has recently made an announcement about a major renovation in their spam reporting and fighting technologies used in the site.  This is another big move by the company, and comes just after they made the bombshell announcement to remove all affiliate links from pins on their sites.

For the spam fighting move, they now claim that they are able to take down spam attacks in just milliseconds, compared to taking between 4 and 24 hours in the past.  This is obviously a huge improvement, and will not only help to eliminate spam, but will also discourage spammers from even making the attempt to get their content in front of users.

They also reported that their system testing found that they have successfully responded to ‘bad behavior’ at a rate of 99.99%. This is quite impressive, especially when compared to the previous rate, which was 95%.

This is certainly a positive move for the social network.  It does make one wonder what all of these changes are going to do to the site, however.  Pinterest has been growing in popularity, especially in terms of traffic it is getting.  By eliminating the affiliate incentive to post pins, that will cut a lot of activity out.  In addition, the elimination of these spam links will also reduce it (obviously this is a positive reduction).

It will be interesting to see what future traffic reports find.  Will these moves actually encourage more actual users? Or should expect to see an overall reduction in traffic for this site in the near future.
