New Google+ Feature Allows you to Restrict Who can See Content More Precisely

Google+ has recently pushed out a new setting that will let users more precisely restrict who can see their content.  Specifically, you will now be able to choose from five options under the ‘target audience’ setting.  The options are:

  • Anyone – This is obviously the default and will be shown to anyone that would normally see your posts based on the traditional Google+ algorithm.
  • Users 18 and Older – This one is new and will restrict your posts to only members who are over 18. This is a good option when promoting products that require the purchaser to be over 18.
  • Users 21 and Older – Just like the 18 and up option, only users have to be 21. This is the age people have to be to buy alcohol in the US, so one would assume that is what this will be used for.
  • Alcohol-Related – Interestingly, they have an option to mark a post as alcohol-related. Posts with this target audience won’t be shown to people in countries where alcohol is illegal.
  • Custom – As always, you can also make your own custom settings so only the people you select can see your posts.

It is important to note that these restrictions are only for the actual Google+ network.  They aren’t available for other Google properties, such as YouTube.  These options will allow marketers to work more responsibly to ensure only those who should see their posts will be able to.

You can see more information about this feature on the official announcement HERE (as long as they didn’t it based on your age).
