UK Bloggers Suck at Affiliate Sales?

Millions of people from around the world start their own blog because they are hoping to have some fun publishing content, and maybe make some nice income at the same time.  While most people recognize that the vast majority of bloggers won’t get rich from their sites, most people also hope that they will at least make a respectable wage for the time they are investing.

According to a new survey from Optimus Performance Marketing, that is not what is happening.

The study surveyed 2043 bloggers from the UK and found that they made an average of just €4.14 per hour.  Compare this to the minimum wage in the UK, which is €6.13 (for those over 21 years old) and it can get downright depressing.  While I’m not aware of any studies or surveys that were done in the US, I would imagine the results would be quite similar.

The study found that while UK bloggers work an average of 18.25 hours a month on their blog, they are only making €75.60 for their efforts.  This is for bloggers who monetize their web properties through affiliate commissions.

In addition, the study found that it didn’t really matter what niche people were blogging about, they all made fairly similar incomes.  Some other interesting statistics in the survey results include:

  • Female bloggers average age is 23, male bloggers it is 26 years old
  • London has the most bloggers, at 23% of respondents
  • The average UK blogger has 285 followers or subscribers
  • The average blogger spent 2 years and 8 months blogging for non-commercial sites

Of course, for many people, making money with their blog is truly secondary to the joy they get of writing, posting pictures, or generally interacting with people on their sites.  It may still be disheartening, however, to find that so many people are blogging and not making much money at all.

For bloggers who are interested in improving their earnings, it makes sense to spend some time improving not only their blogging skills, but alto their marketing skills.  You can, for example, read through some of the high quality ‘expert guides’ found HERE on PMI.  You can learn a lot about how to work with affiliates, drive traffic, and improve conversions so your blog can start making you a real income.
