Social Content Encourages Purchases for 62% of Consumers

It is well known that people are more likely to buy something if their friends or family have already purchased it and enjoyed it, and posted about it on their social media accounts.  A recent survey was done by Harris Interactive that has helped to show just how beneficial these types of social posts can be.  62% of people who they polled said that they are more likely to buy items after seeing their friends’ social media posts about them.

The survey focused on people between the ages of 18 and 44 years old.

In addition, they learned that 45% of people in this age group are using their social networks to post opinions, pictures and other information about products they’ve purchased.

Marketers can do a lot to encourage this type of activity, and get customers to do it in a way that will get them the best results.  Including hash tags, or the Facebook page of the brand, for example, will help get the post most publicity.  It is often possible to have people post their reviews right on the actual Facebook page of the product, which will allow friends and family to ‘like’ the page more easily.

Whatever is done, it is a good idea to try to get people to post these types of reviews with every purchase.  If each purchase can lead to other people making a purchase, and then posting their own pictures, reviews or opinions, it can dramatically increase sales, without having to invest significantly in marketing.

This is just one more study that confirms the power of social media in today’s competitive marketing world.  What types of things do you do to try to get your customers to post about their purchases?  Share your thoughts in the comments below.
