38% Sales Improvement from Consumer Videos

Just about all marketers know that videos can be a powerful tool for driving sales.  In addition, when consumers endorse a specific product, it can also lead to better sales.  With this in mind, it could be assumed that consumer generated videos can help brands convert at higher rates, and a new study from EXPO confirms this.  They found that brands which place consumer-generated video content on pages with the products they are talking about, sales went up by 38%.  This is a huge jump in conversion rate, which all marketers should take note of.

The report looked at sales numbers beginning in June of 2012 and ending in June of 2013.  The data was pulled from online sales only, and looking specifically at eight brands from within the Reckitt Benckiser’s line of consumer goods.  This included Clearasil, Delsym, Finish, Lysol, Airwick, Resolve, Veet and Woolite.  All of these are nationally known brands with established reputations, which makes the findings of this report even more impressive (in my opinion).

In addition to the improved sales, more people were actually watching the videos which were recorded by the consumers, rather than those professionally made.  56% of the time, visitors to the site would choose the consumer created videos when given the choice between those and a study produced option.  Many brands will love to hear this, because consumer generated videos are cheap or free to use, compared with professional options that can add thousands of dollars in expenses to any marketing campaign.

Reckitt Benckiser has said that they plan on increasing the video content on their sites over the next quarter by 300%.  This, obviously, is a huge move by the brand, and if the information from the report remains true, it will result in a significant improvement to the bottom line for products being sold online, and even in stores.
