New “View Ads” Tab Coming to Facebook for Increased Transparency

With all the controversy surrounding last year’s US presidential elections and the Facebook ads that were used to influence it, the social network is moving forward with a new feature to make advertising more transparent. Beginning in Canada next month, and rolling out to the US after that, there will be a ‘View Ads’ tab on any Page that is showing advertisements on any platform that uses the Facebook ad network.

This tab will display all the ads that the Page is currently running. This will help to give consumers an easy way to see what all a page is promoting. The advertisements will be shown from Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and all of the Facebook Audience Network.

In the blog post where the announcement was made, Facebook said, “All Pages will be part of this effort, and we will require that all ads be associated with a Page as part of the ad creation process.”

Another feature of the new tab will be having the ability to search archived advertisements, and even display ads specifically related to an election. Consumers can view information about the ads such as the total amount spent on the ad campaign, the number of times the ad was shown, and the target audience of the ad.

Along with this feature, Facebook is implementing a policy of more obvious ad identification for election related marketing. Specifically, ads related to an election will need to have a label that says, “Paid For By” to help avoid any confusion.
