State of Internet Security Report Released from Akamai

One of the leading content delivery networks in the world, Akamai, has released their Fourth Quarter 2016 State of the Internet / Security Report. This is an important report for people who work with cloud technologies, treat management, and more. Of course, it also provides valuable insights into threats that may be present against websites and other digital properties that are required for many marketers.

Martin McKeay, a senior security advocate and senior editor of the report, “As we saw with the Mirai botnet attacks during the third quarter, unsecured Internet of Things (IoT) devices continued to drive significant DDoS attack traffic. With the predicted exponential proliferation of these devices, threat agents will have an expanding pool of resources to carry out attacks, validating the need for companies to increase their security investments. Additional emerging system vulnerabilities are expecting before devices become more secure.”

The report looks at some of the largest DDoS attacks that took place, and points out the 140% year-over-year growth in attacks over 100 Gbps. Web application attacks also grew, which presents some very serious threats to some web based businesses.

McKeay went on to say, “If anything, our analysis of Q4 2016 proves the old axiom ‘expect the unexpected’ to be true for the world of web security. For example, perhaps the attackers in control of Spike felt challenged by Mirai and wanted to be more competitive. If that’s the case, the industry should be prepared to see other botnet operators testing the limits of their attack engines, generating even larger attacks.”
