Mobile Passes Desktop for Global Internet Usage

StatCounter has recently announced that according to their data, mobile devices are generating more of the total global internet traffic than PCs for the first time. According to the report, mobile (including both smartphones and tablets) is responsible for 51.3% of the internet usage, and desktop computers are generating 48.7%.  This is the first time that, on a global scale, this has occurred.

Now that this milestone has been passed, however, it seems likely that the trend will certainly continue. Mobile is growing in the total amount of traffic it is generating for a variety of reasons. As more and more people are watching videos (including full HD movies) on their mobile devices, it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that this is happening.  Especially since the data looks just at the device being used, not the type of internet connection. Many people use mobile devices on WiFi.

Another recent report came out from Zenith that predicted mobile devices will be responsible for 75% of global internet usage by the end of 2017, which indicates an extremely rapid growth over the next year.

Finally, the IAB also reported that in the US, mobile advertising is generating nearly half of all ad revenue. The total ad revenue in the first half of 2016 was $32.7 billion, with $15.5 billion of that coming from mobile devices. In this area too, the shift from desktop to mobile devices continues to progress quite rapidly.

While everyone knows that mobile is the clear future of digital marketing, it is still somewhat surprising at how quickly this move is taking place.
