Twitter Adds Options to Reduce Notifications for Users

Twitter has just updated their interface to help make it easier for users to reduce the number of notifications they are getting, and allow users to experience an overall higher quality of tweets.  The move makes it possible for people to limit Twitter notifications only to people who they are following.  They also added a new quality filter that users are able to take advantage of.

The quality filter allows people to limit notifications from people based on the age of their account (newer accounts are more often going to be spammers) and the account behavior.  So, if a new account is sending out tons of tweets, it is likely something that the user doesn’t want to see, so they can have the notifications disabled from that account.

These are fairly simple changes, but they should provide a significant improvement to many people’s Twitter experience.

For marketers, however, it might introduce some issues.  Marketers typically send out more Tweets, and many of them use newer accounts.  This could cause the number of people who see a promotional Tweet, for example, to go down significantly.

By following some best practices regarding how you get followers, how often you send out messages, and other things, it should be possible to minimize the impact of this change.
