What you can do to Fight Click Fraud

Click fraud is one of the most costly problems a marketer can face.  Depending on which studies or estimates you look at, this type of fraud is costing brands hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars each year.  Sadly, many of us feel like there is very little that can be done to fight this issue.  The reality is, however, that there are some things to help push the ‘war on click fraud’ forward.  Look at the following actions you can take to help improve the industry.

Contact Your Lawmakers

Believe it or not, most types of click fraud are not even illegal at this point.  Since it is not against the law, it can be much more difficult to hold those who use this type of marketing responsible and get them to stop.  Making click fraud a federal offense would not only discourage many people from taking part in this type of thing, but it would also give victims more of a chance at recovering damages when they lose their marketing budgets to this type of fraud.

To make click fraud a crime you will need to start by contacting your state and federal lawmakers.  Writing to your senators and congressmen to alert them to this problem is a great first step.  If enough marketers write in letting them know what a problem this is, they will be pressured to address the issue.

Use Marketing Agencies that Fight Fraud

We all know that some marketing agencies are better than others when it comes to identifying fraud and eliminating it from their systems.  While no company can effectively stop 100% of the click fraud, it is a good idea to work with companies that are taking a proactive approach to this problem.  Even if it costs a little more up front, the results will be worth it in the end.  You’ll not only be fighting click fraud but your marketing budget will be more effective as well.

Harness the Power of the IAB Bot List

The Interactive Advertising Bureau has been working on a ‘bot list’ that has an ever updating list of spiders and bots that can be used to set a baseline for detecting fraud.  This list can be a powerful asset when engaging in any type of advertising.  Many ad networks already compare their traffic to this list, but not all of them.  Whether you’re an ad network or a customer, make sure you are getting the benefits of the IAB bot list.  This will reduce the overall fraud and improve your marketing results.

While none of these things will put an end to click fraud tomorrow, they are all things that any marketer can do.  If you begin implementing these ideas into your overall marketing strategy, and other marketers do the same, it can help to combat the scourge of click fraud that has been plaguing the industry for far too long.
