France Wants Google’s Secrets

In the latest move against Google from countries in the European Union, France is actually trying to force the search giant to release the algorithm used to produce their SERPs.  This would obviously be a huge problem for Google, which is only successful because they are able to give searchers what is widely seen to be the best search results on the net.

If they had to release this information to France, it would undoubtedly be seen by other search engines too, and they could use that information to further improve their own search results.  It would also help SEOs to make changes in the way they work to further manipulate the search engines, thus resulting in a lower quality user experience for those who are actually searching.

The new bill that is going through the French legislator is supposed to bring more ‘fairness’ to the search results.

In addition, the bill that is being proposed would require that Google also provide links to at least three rival search engines on their own home page.  That’s right, Google would essentially have to advertise for other search engines on their own home page.

As you might have expected, there is also a provision for the French government to make money off the back of Google.  If passed, the new law would allow French regulators to charge a penalty against Google for non-compliance.  The penalty would be 10% of gross revenue.

If passed, Google would have to decide whether they want to actively market for the competition, or give up 10% of their revenue. No matter what the French government says the reasons for this are, the bottom line is that it is because Google is providing a service that the people of France want to use.  And they are doing it better than anyone else in the country.  Of course, Google is making a nice profit for their service, but isn’t that the whole point of running a business?
