Facebook Killing Pages in Feed

In what seems to be an ongoing trend with Facebook, the Pages are going to be seen even less than before once they complete a new algorithm roll out.  The social media giant is launching three new updates to the News Feed algorithm, which are designed to ‘improve’ what people see in their feeds.  According to Facebook, this means more posts from ‘friends’ and fewer from pages.

As all marketers know, Facebook pages are a key way to market to a potentially very targeted audience.  Pages are ‘followed’ by people who choose to ‘like’ the pages in the first place, which makes them a very attractive audience for launching products, promoting services or even just building brand recognition.  With the new updates, however, this is going to be more difficult and less effective than ever.

A post written by Facebook staff says, “The impact of these changes on your page’s distribution will vary considerably depending on the composition of your audience and your posting activity.  In some cases, post reach and referral traffic could potentially decline.  Overall, pages should continue to post things that people find meaningful and consider these best practices for driving referral traffic.”

While it seems that Facebook is trying to downplay the potential impact, many marketing professionals believe it will be quite significant. Many expert surmise the purpose of this is to force page owners and businesses to buy more ads and “boosts” of their posts to reach their audience.

If you have been using Facebook to generate leads or traffic to your site, make sure you are looking to diversify.  While Facebook can and should still be used effectively, it is not the reliable source of heavy traffic that it once was.
