You may want to change your Password…Now

According to recent reports, a Russian crime ring has pulled off one of the largest security hacks in history.  If the reports are true, they have stolen 1.2 Billion (yes, with a B) user names and passwords, as well as more than 500 million email addresses.

The breach was first found by Hold Security, which reported that confidential information was gathered from about 420,000 different websites.  This is the same firm that discovered the security hack of Adobe Systems last year, which resulted in tens of millions of stolen records.

Alex Holden, founder of Hold Security, said “Hackers did not just target U.S. companies, they targeted any website they could get, ranging from Fortune 500 companies to very small websites.  And most of these sites are still vulnerable.”

They have not, and likely will not, release the names of the sites due to non-disclosure agreements and other security concerns.

Regardless of which sites were hacked, and how it occurred, it is a good idea for everyone to take a few minutes to update your passwords just to be safe.  After all, this is something that we should be doing more often anyway.
