Facebook & Google Dominate Mobile Ad Growth

According to a recent report from eMareter, mobile ad spending increased by 105% in 2013 to a total of $17.96 Billion.  The growth is expected to continue through 2014 by an estimated 75.1%, bringing digital mobile ad spend to $31.45 Billion.  While there was growth in almost every measurable area, and for virtually every mobile ad provider, the biggest winners were Facebook and Google.  These two companies grabbed up $6.92 Billion of the $9.2Billion in extra dollars that were spent in 2013.

Their dominance of the mobile ad market will continue to grow in 2014, and likely well beyond that.  While Google has done a great job in delivering mobile ad content to their ad network, Facebook has really made mobile a priority.  Their new mobile ad options, including video that begins to play when the ad is on the screen, are helping to bring in new marketers.  These innovative mobile ad solutions also draw in improved customer interaction, which is something all brands desire.

The following chart breaks down the mobile ad revenue worldwide for 2012, 2013 and the estimates for 2014.  This shows that while Google is still the dominant player here, Facebook is making huge gains.  These gains are largely brought in by capturing a much larger portion of new ad revenue.  Even though Google’s percentage of the mobile market is dropping, their total mobile revenue is still on the rise.

Another interesting statistic that really highlights Facebook’s focus on mobile is that in 2012 only 11% of their ad revenue worldwide was brought in via mobile ads.  Last year that number went up to 45.1% and in 2014 it is expected to be around 63%.  Google is also moving to a more mobile focused profit, though at a slower pace.  In 2013 their mobile ads accounted for 23.1% of revenue, and it is expected to shoot up to 33.8% in 2014.
