Getty Images Added to Yahoo Search

Yahoo’s Search Product Director, Girish Krishnan, has made an announcement that they will begin including high-quality images in many common SERPs.  When, for example, people are searching for countries or places there will be images of those things immediately displayed.  Given the fact that a significant percentage of people doing these searches are looking for images to begin with, this could be a great new feature.

Another possible benefit for Yahoo is that displaying these images may make those viewing them want to visit the beautiful locations.  This could make them the ideal search engine for travel sites, which are historically popular and willing to pay high prices for displaying their ads.

While Google and Bing occasionally include images in their search results, they are just the normal quality results from image searches.  Yahoo, on the other hand, has partnered with Getty Images to get extremely high-quality images for thousands of popular locations. Girish Krishnan in his announcement said, “You’ll see a collection of gorgeous Getty Images from that location. The partnership allows us to display high-quality photos from award-winning photographers.

This is just the latest in a series of updates and improvements to the overall look, feel and function of the Yahoo search interface.  Previously they revamped the whole user interface and news pages to make performing searches from any Yahoo owned property much easier.   There have also been many other high-profile changes throughout Yahoo over the past several months including purchases of Tumblr and other properties.  Yahoo continues to focus on improvement and innovation, and this latest change is just one more example of that.
