Another New Bing Feature for Internet Marketers

In Bing’s ongoing push for market share they have announced another new feature for website owners looking to optimize the traffic they get from the Bing search engine.  This feature will allow site owners to block specific pages of their site from being displayed as a deep link in the SERPs.   Sites which rank well on the results pages of both Bing and Google often have deep links displayed under the main page.  This gives the searcher more options, and also gives the web page additional exposure.

Google and Bing both display these deep links based on their algorithms, but now Bing is allowing site owners to have additional control over this feature.  There are many situations where blocking specific pages for these deep link display makes sense.  If, for example, Bing was displaying an internal page in the SERPs that contains content that is dependent on another page on your site.  Having visitors go directly to that page could cause confusion a high bounce rate.  Some people may want to block the about us or contact us pages if they don’t want visitors starting on that page.

Each marketer will have their own reasons for allowing or blocking different pages on their site, but the fact that Bing is now allowing site owners the choice is a good thing.  In addition to simply blocking specific pages, Bing allows specific pages to be blocked based on different criteria.  If, for example, you want to block one page for traffic coming from one geographic part of the world, that is now possible.  You can also block pages based on the keywords and other details about the search which is generating the results.

While this isn’t a game changing update, it is just one more example of Bing pushing out innovative changes to benefit both the individuals doing the searching, and the marketers.  This could be an excellent strategy to slowly win over a bigger percentage of the overall search engine market.  They certainly have a long road ahead of them, but with continued updates and improvements Google might eventually have a real competitor on their hands.
